The field of health care is growing rapidly and there is a steady need for qualified individuals to work throughout all areas. Some positions are more in demand than others although, any career in the health industry right now will be beneficial. One career that serves as a great way to enter the health care field is that of the phlebotomist. Someone who has training and certification in phlebotomy will have numerous career options available to them. Once the training is finished, the new phlebotomist will have many phlebotomy careers to choose from.
To take phlebotomy training, you would have to find an approved school or program that offers the classes. The classes will typically be a minimum of around 6 weeks long and are offered by many medical schools and colleges. During training, a phlebotomist will learn how to take blood for testing or donation. It takes a steady hand and focus to be able to perfect the process of venipuncture when drawing blood and hence the training will be quite thorough. Classes will include learning the human anatomy, safety procedures, health practices and physiology among many.
Phlebotomy careers offer many different options as to where the phlebotomist can be employed. One place that a phlebotomist might be employed is at a hospital. In a hospital, the phlebotomist services are highly needed to perform blood testing procedures on patients where a diagnosis is difficult to determine. Besides drawing blood, the phlebotomist in a hospital might be responsible for doing things like giving injections. When there is a phlebotomist present in the hospital environment, there is less need to have as many nursing staff around because the phlebotomist can do much of the nurse’s duties thus cutting hospital expenses.
Another place that phlebotomy careers can take you is to a private doctor’s office. Tasks done in a private medical facility would be similar to when working in a hospital. You might even have additional responsibilities and pay if you are certified to perform medical assistant’s duties as well.
Phlebotomist’s are also found working in a traveling environment. This is where you would be going to a number of different places to take blood. This can be anything from different hospitals to a traveling blood donation center similar to that of the American Red Cross.
There are additional tasks and procedures that may be learned during the phlebotomist’s career in order to enhance the job and pay. These tasks include a range of things from drawing blood in different areas of the body to putting in an IV. For each of the special areas, there will be extra training required although, this will open up more career possibilities for the phlebotomist as well as increase the salary.
Whichever direction is chosen when becoming a phlebotomist, they are all sure to be beneficial when it comes to the pay and advancement opportunities. Many phlebotomist’s go on to become nurses and other health care professionals in the field. With increasing job positions in the health field and the great amount of knowledge to be learned, there couldn’t be a better time than now to start a career as a phlebotomist.
